Release the MOFA 4!
Karapatan -Northern Mindanao Region, along with members of the United Church of Christ of the Philippines, Iglesia Filipina Independiente, and the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines-Northern Mindanao Sub- Region visited today the detained officers and members of the Misamis Oriental Farmers Association (MOFA) at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Patag, Cagayan de Oro City.
Gerry Basahon, Gerard Basahon, Marivic Colita, and Mylene Colita were arrested by members of the AFP and CIDG Misamis Oriental on January 30 at around 6:30pm.
Marivic and Mylene shared how elements of the military barged into their office last night without showing any warrant of arrest.
When they objected to the illegal entry, an angry soldier shouted ” Shut up, you don’t have any right”.
What was more outrageous is how the soldiers pointed their guns to the two children — aged 1 and two — apparently to force the MOFA members to stop from protesting. The adults were handcuffed, with one soldier punching Gerry Basahon in the head.
The MOFA members were escorted outside the house while the soldiers ransacked the office.
Afterwards, members of CIDG Misamis Oriental arrived and “searched” the house, finding the guns and explosives that were obviously planted by the military.
This outrageous violation of human rights and basic arrest procedure screams of foul play and impunity. This is the trademark of the Duterte regime and the Martial Law extension in Mindanao.
We demand the immediate release of the detained members of MOFA and subsequent dismissal of charges against them. We also demand the respect of human rights and end the attacks against human rights defenders.
