URGENT ALERT: Three Lumad leaders were illegally arrested

Three Lumad leaders were illegally arrested
by elements of the 36th IBPA at Sitio Poog, Maitom, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, 5am today, October 5, 2018.

The three are leaders of SIDLAK Lumad organization, namely Enecito Catapte (SIDLAK Chairperson), Junie Catapte and Lito Delicona (Purok Chairperson).

SIDLAK (Sustinidong Ipalambo ug Depensahan ang Lumadnong Kahiushan Alang sa Sumusunod nga Kaliwatan) is a Lumad organization in the hinterlands of Tandag, Cortez, and Lanuza strongly opposing the entry of mining and logging concessions in their ancestral lands.

Prior to the arrest, the leaders report having been repeatedly “invited” by soldiers to the 36th IB headquarters. Soldiers have also been pressuring the leaders to close down their community school, TRIFPSS (Tribal Filipino Program of Surigao del Sur).

In July 2018, Lt Col Xerxes Trinidad also publicly threatened to close down their community school during a rally by the AFP in Tandag City.

The three Lumad leaders are currently being held at the headquarters of the said unit in Tandag City.
