Nonstop crackdown and attacks vs. farmers, indigenous people

Police raids Misamis Oriental Farmers Association office, firearms and explosives planted, five MOFA members and 2 minors taken

The Misamis Oriental Farmers Association (MOFA) in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental was raided by combined elements of the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines and MISOR-NICA at around 6:30pm, January 30.

MOFA is the provincial chapter of Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas in Misamis Oriental.

The arresting team planted explosives and firearms and forcibly took five MOFA members staying at the peasant organization’s office.

Among those reportedly taken were MOFA chairperson Jerry Basahon, Gerald Basahon, Marivic Colita (along with her one-year old child), Mylene Colita (along with her 2-year old relative) and a new member identified only as Janine.

The police claimed they arrested 4 NPA leaders based on two search warrants for violation of RA 10591 and RA 9516 or illegal possession of firearms and explosives.

As of 9:30pm, Magnum Radio Cagayan De Oro reported that the police claimed that they found a hand grenade, a .45 caliber pistol, land mine and documents inside the MOFA office. The four adults were brought to the CIDG detention center while the minors were brought to the local DSWD.

Earlier this week, the PNP and AFP illegally arrested KMP-Northern Mindanao leader Ireneo Udarbe and Lumad leader Datu Jomorito Goaynon. They were slapped with fabricated criminal charges and also presented as top NPA leaders.

KMP condemns this nonstop crackdown and attacks against farmers, indigenous people.

“The PNP and AFP are working overtime to carry out incessant crackdown and attacks against progressive and democratic organizations,” says Antonio Flores, KMP Secretary General.

“The full force of Martial Law and Oplan Kapayapaan severely violates the rights of the people asserting for the legimate demands. We are calling on all sectors to remain vigilant against these attacks,” Flores concluded. ###
