Duterte channels Marcos’ fascist megalomania as attacks on Tausugs, Maranaws, Lumad and farmers spike in Mindanao
As the nation remembers the dark days of Marcosian Martial Law today, September 21, a familiar shadow is cast over Mindanao as massacres, aerial bombardments, and forced evacuations are reprised by the Duterte government against Moro, Lumad, and peasant communities all over the island.
The massacre of 7 Tausug youth in Patikul, Sulu last week reopens the fresh wounds of the Jabidah Massacre when the dictator Ferdinand Marcos sacrificed the lives of Tausug men in his grandiose military adventure of invading Sabah, Malaysia. On September 14, seven young men were summarily executed by the Task Group Panther who charged them as members of Abu Sayaff. The families who claimed their remains adamantly said they are just out to harvest fruits. The Patikul 7 has hiked the EJK list to 153 victims and will certainly claim more names. From being pawns for Marcos’ fascist megalomania, Tausug youth have become targets of Duterte’s bogus “war on terror” which is being used as a cover for State terrorism.
Last week also saw the murder of twenty-three year-old Lumad farmer Rex Hangadon of Buenavista, Agusan del Norte. He became the 146th EJK victim on September 15, 2018 allegedly perpetrated by the 23rd IB, Philippine Army. Hangadon’s father is feared dead after having gone missing since the Higaonon Lumad community were forced to evacuate due to military operations.
President Duterte’s Martial Law is being imposed straight out of Marcos’ playbook. Today, September 21, the nation is witness to the fascist realities of Dutertian Martial Law. In August and September, four bombing incidents gripped Isulan in Sultan Kudarat, Midsayap in North Cotabato, and General Santos City. These episodes of bombings and murders are reminiscent of Marcosian Martial Law. Fear and discord were systematically sown to justify its declaration on September 21, 1972.
Circumventing the limits imposed by the 1987 Constitution, Duterte is laying the groundwork for perpetual extension of Martial Law and has been consistently conditioning the Filipino people that a revolutionary government-cum-dictatorship and federalism-cum-constitutional authoritarianism are the remaining alternatives to nationwide Martial Law.
Duterte wants the people to cower into submission as he pimps the resource-rich and opportunity- bountiful island of Mindanao to oligarchs and foreign interests. But the Filipino people have spoken resolutely against plunder, dictatorship, and tyranny whether Marcosian or Dutertian.
Mindanaoans are taking to the streets in the cities of Davao, Kidapawan, Cotabato, Cagayan De Oro, General Santos and Butuan today to denounce continuing Martial Law under the Duterte regime. These mobilizations are happening right in Duterte’s Mindanao, a strong indictment of the ravages of Martial Law both past and present and a resolute show of resistance to Duterte’s dictatorship and tyranny.
END MARTIAL LAW IN MINDANAO!
