We, at People’s Chorale vehemently condemn the illegal arrest of at least 13 church workers, activists, and volunteers in Gen. Santos City on the night of July 4, 2018. Among them was Aldeem Yañez of Iglesia Filipina Independiente, a member of the People’s Chorale and composer of several progressive songs.
They were captured during a consultation on farmers and Lumad issues with volunteers and partners of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente Visayas-Mindanao Regional Office for Development at Mother Francisca Spirituality Center. They were brought to Philippine National Police Regional Office 12 at Camp Fermin G. Lira Jr. also in Gen. Santos City.
Also arrested were Teresita Naul of KARAPATAN, Jomorito Guaynon of Kalumbay, Ireneo Udarbe of Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, Vennel Chenfoo of Kabataan Partylist, Kristine Cabardo of the League of Filipino Students, volunteer Roger Plana, and other companions including the seminar house security guard and staff. Currently, the charges against them remain unknown.
We deem this incident as an attack on the democratic rights of people’s organizations and religious institutions and a manifestation of the continuing implementation of martial law in the whole of Mindanao.
We enjoin our fellow artists and cultural workers to oppose these kinds of attacks on our rights and freedoms and call to lift martial law in Mindanao. ###
