Activists hit “cheap yet dangerous” red tagging against Bayan-NMR

“Movement Against Tyranny – Northern Mndanao Region (MAT-NMR) condemns the latest incident of harassment and red-tagging against the regional formation of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan-NMR) by unidentified men who put up malicious posters near Bayan-NMR’s office earlier today.”

This is the statement of Rev. Fr. Rolando Abejo, IFI, spokesperson of MAT-NMR. Fr. Abejo said that neighbors of Bayan-NMR’s office in Brgy. Camaman-an reported seeing two men in a black XRM motorcycle put up said posters at around 7am of December 26. The posters read “Ang lugar na ito ay taguan ng mga mamamatay-taong NPA”.

He also claims that putting up these posters play into President Duterte’s recent threat to destroy the CPP, NPA and its so-called legal fronts. “By equating a legal organization such as Bayan-NMR with the armed group NPA, they are signalling that we are fair targets of attacks and violence by State forces. And this happens one day ater Christmas.”

He added, “It is very ironic that President Duterte preaches ‘compassion, kindness, and reconciliation’ in his Christmas message while instructing his minions to attack activitists and human rights defenders.”

“But the people of Northern Mindanao will not be cowed by these cheap tricks. We will continue to work for the rights of the people and for just and lasting peace,” he ended.
